Another (Jump to title) - Overall: 8 - Violence Rating: 6 - Nudity Rating: 3 - Theological Themes: 5 - Other Negative Themes: 2 Review Another is an interesting story. Each episode leads into the other with a cliffhanger that keeps the viewer hooked on to each episode. The animation, while not the best I've seen, is adequate, and the character development and voices are done excellently. Violence/gore: In the series, a lot of characters die. The death scenes are realistic, and rather gruesome. For example, one character is stabbed in the juggular by an umbrella, and a pool of blood shows up around the body. An elevator crash happens, and the dead character has a pool of blood after his face hits the floor. The most gruesome death, however, is a suicide which I will NOT go into detail on. However, some could argue that it is typical for a horror series. Nudity/Sexual content: No sexual content, but some of the dolls are detailed, and have nipples. But it is not in a sexual contex. In a beach episode, some of the females wear revealing bikinis, but nothing more to report here. Potentially Problematic Theological themes: The series all centers around a Spoiler: curse of sorts that infests the whole school. When an extra student pops up, school students, and or relatives of school students, apparently die once a month when an student is extra, and is not given room in the classroom. The students make a point to pretend a extra student doesn't exist so the curse doesn't take effect. Other Potentially Problematic Themes: The series atmosphere is very dark, and creepy, and dolls that appear during the series have a very creepy feel about them.
Clannad (Jump to title) - Overall: 10 - Violence Rating: 3 - Nudity Rating: 4 - Theological Themes: 4 - Other Negative Themes: 3 Review Violence: The violence is all comical, slapstick beat downs on one of the main characters, and no one is ever seriously hurt. The most "violent" thing that occurs (or, more like implied) Spoiler: is when we discover a main character's parents both died in a plane crash. This is not shown, however. Nudity/Sexual Content: Mostly rather tame innuendoes, pranks pulled by Tomoya occasionially suggest a character is gay, but this is always proved to be false. In one episode, two characters are accedentially locked in a storage closet and while sex is implied, it never happens. However, Spoiler: In episode 23, an extra episode that isn't important to the story, there is a scene where Tomoya misinterperts a girl who's talking to him's diolague to mean she's actually in love with her brother. Again, this is proven to be false, but taking an issue like this as a joke is definitely inappropriate, hence why I gave this series a 4 in this category. Potentially problematic theological themes: Spoiler: One character is actually an astral projection of a girl who is currently in a coma. While similar to the concept of a ghost, the girl's main purpose is to invite people to her older sister's wedding which is honestly a sweet concept. In addition, there are some usages of tarot cards, fortunes told, and once or twice spells cast, although this is not significant to the plot. I only gave this a 4 because Spoiler: of the previously mentioned incest comment. Other potentially problematic themes: Nagisa's father is almost constantly smoking, and Tomoya's father spends most of his life drinking and gambling. Minor swearing usually infrequent, but occasionially used more often. a, da, h*, pi (and its variant), and ba***** (which is used once) all appear somewhere in the dialog.

Overall, this series is appropriate for ages 13 and up with the exception of the content listed above.
Hikaru no Go (Jump to title) - Overall: 9 - Violence Rating: 2 - Nudity Rating: 1 - Theological Themes: 2 - Other Negative Themes: 1 Review Hikaru no Go sounds like it would be a boring series. But it isn't. It is an awesome show, with great character development used to hook you on to the show. Although their is slight spiritual things with Sai being a ghost and all, but overall it is a series the whole family can enjoy together. Dub vs. Sub: I have only watched the dub, but some of the character's voices are awkward, so if you are distracted by that, please watch the sub. Violence: Only the occasional slapstick, and Hikaru and Sai imagine a game of Go in certain points of the series to be a sword match, and is shown on screen. It is only imaginary, howeber, and no blood is shown. Nudity: None. And compared to alot of other anime, the characters don't wear short skirts. Theological themes: Sai is a ghost. He was stuck in a Go board for a long time, and is now a spirit dwelling within Hikaru. But this is pretty much it. Nothing is explored on religion. Problemaic themes: None.
Hyouka (Jump to title) - Overall: 9 - Violence Rating: 3 - Nudity Rating: 3 - Theological Themes: 3 - Other Negative Themes: 3 Review Hyouka is one of the most touching, and well written anime I have ever seen. The characters are well-developed, very well rounded, and interact with each other in a realistic, and believiable well. The growth of character that occurs for the four members of the Classics Club (especially Oreki Hotaru) is also done realisticially. The mystieries are interesting, and will definitley keep any mystery fan interested (even if the first one is incredibly simple). The plot, while very slow moving at first especially, is interesting, and brings the most interesting aspects of the characters out into the open. Combine that with some of the most beautiful animation done by studio Kyoani, and a very well done romance done without copying every single trope in the book. And, the fact that the show for the most part is very clean, its definitley an excellent choice for fans of romance, and mystery alike. Violence/Gore: None, although in a mini-movie that becomes an important part of the plot, a character loses his arm, but it is clearly shown to be fake. An uprising at a school is also described, but not shown in detail. Nudity/Sexual Content: Not much although in episode 7, male nudity is threatened, but not shown, and Hotaru considers what Chitanda does in the shower briefly, but nothing is shown there. Hotaru is also caught looking at pictures of her in costumes posing, but none are revealing. In episode 11.5, he is seen checking her out in a bathing suit, and when she realizes this, is flustered. Potentially Problematic Theological Themes: Buddhist shrines are seen, and stuff like tarot cards, and fortunes are referenced. Chitanda is seen praying a prayer of good luck at a shrine. Other Potentially Problematic Themes: Infrequent language ranging from da, h, and pi* and its variant. Sake is referenced, but not consumed. A male teenager secretly is smoking in the school, but this is looked down upon.
Kekkashi (Jump to title) - Overall: 7 - Violence Rating: 6 - Nudity Rating: 2 - Theological Themes: 5 - Other Negative Themes: 3 Review Kekkashi is a fun ride while it lasts. Yoshimori's conflict with Tokine throughout the series is well developed, and the plot up until the ending is given a lot of anticipation. However, the ending just crushes any hope of the anime getting anything above a 7. To put it without spoilers, it was just so lame, and did not fulfil my expectations at all. Despite the ending being horribly done, the series may be worth a watch as long as you don't go in expecting much of the ending. Violence/Gore: Violence is very prominent in the series, and there is some blood, but nothing overtly gory. True, the spirits that attack the school do get sliced a lot, but not much goo comes out of them. Nudity/Sexual Content: Tokine is shown taking a bath, and you see her shoulders, but nothing more. Potentially Problematic Theological Themes: A fuzzy creature is called a "god" and floating spirits are a prominent theme of the series. An entire episode is focused on a ghost trying to find peace before he ascends to the after life. So, there is a lot to be concerned about in this category. Other Potentially Problematic themes: There was some mild profanity littered throughout, but nothing severe.
Sonic X (Jump to title) - Overall: 6 - Violence Rating: 3 - Nudity Rating: 2 - Theological Themes: 1 - Other Negative Themes: 1 Review Sonic X is a decent series. It does a decent job of incorporating stories from the games into a new plot with new characters. The ending is disappointing in the dub, and there are a few holes. While the 4kids dub is not that heavily edited, some plot points are altered, so I would suggest watching the 4kids sub on their youtube channel. I would say this series is sutible for ages 7 and up. Note: The fan subs have a lot of mistranslated cursing. Do not watch them. Violence: THe violence is not realestic at all, and while there are laser guns, and bullets in the sub as well as fights involving fists, they are generally short, and the injuries are not shown with blood. Nudity/sexual content: 1 character has a revealing outfit, but that is pretty much it. In the sub however, there is a scene where a character runs into a building with a lot of skimply clad women, turns red, and runs off. Two other charactes stay with the women, and are later shown with kisses all over them. This is non existent in the dub. In the sub, Eggman is also shown commenting on the skimply clad character Rouge's, breast size, and is promptly slammed in the head.This is also not in the dub. Theological themes: God is mentioned (in the sub), but in a positive light in a character saying," Only God can help us now." And it is clearly the Christian GOd he is mentioning. THis shows the Japanesse can show American values in their shows. Problematic Themes: None
The Disappearance of Haruhi Suzumiya (Jump to title) - Overall: 8 - Violence Rating: 5 - Nudity Rating: 2 - Theological Themes: 4 - Other Negative Themes: 4 Review This was a great conclusion to a already excellent title. Beautiful animation, excellent computer animation, and a gripping music score, this film was, I would have to say, the best chapter of the Haruhi series. Violence/Gore: A character punches another, but its more like self defense, and it isn't anything that serious. The climax is where all the blood and violence (which doesn't happen for too long. The violence I mean.) could be too much for some viewers. Nudity/Sexual content: None except at the beginning where Kyon and the viewer see Mikuru's panties, but Kyon only saw them by accedent. This cause Haruhi to labe him a perv. Potentially problematic Theological themes: Haruhi is still a god like character and Spoiler: the world is remade by Yuki Nagato. The film does have a lot to do with this. Other Potentially Problematic themes: Kyon is still partially dirty mouthed, as da and h* are common. ba***** is also used once. Sub vs. dub: I have only watched the dub, but the sub may have less cursing.

The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya (Jump to title) - Overall: 8 - Violence Rating: 5 - Nudity Rating: 5 - Theological Themes: 5 - Other Negative Themes: 3 Review Wow, this series just wowed me. It is an awesome series with great character development, a well developed narriative, and hilarious characters. This series is a must watch for anyone who is I'd say 15, 16-ish years old. I only rated it an 8, because of a repetitious line of episodes called "The Endless Eight" Which are so annoying. Nudity/Sexual content: There is never complete nudity, but it gets VERY close to it, with one of the characters constantly getting stripped by Haruhi, and the camera stays on her undergarments once. Haruhi blackmails a group of teenagers in a very suggestive way. Mikaru's private parts are always obstructed however. Violence/gore: A character is impaled, and there is blood shown. A computer game with scifi violence is shown. There is also some comic violence. Theological Themes:Spoiler: Haruhi is a god] This is a theme that is prevelant throughout the series. Problematic themes: Kyon uses the word "da" A LOT. "h*" Is used a few times as well.
