Review Akira had very high-quality animation, especially for its time, and I admired that. But I found that between the extreme gore and the depressing plot of the show, I did not enjoy it nearly as much as its status as a classic led me to believe. The plot is also somewhat problematic from a religious perspective, but this movie is rated 18+, and if the excessive bloodiness and body horror don't bother you, I don't expect the religious problems will either.

Review Note about problematic themes: Gang warfare is a recurring theme, and although I believe it to be handled maturely and wisely in this show, it may be worth a note of caution to some viewers.

Kino's Journey (Jump to title)

Review The potential problematic themes here need explaining. Kino visits many towns and communities, and in many of them there is something very wrong with the society there. These places tend not to leave one with an overall good impression of humanity. I would say that yes, human cultures are often very screwed up and it is not a lie to bring that to the viewer's attention. However, it can leave the viewer feeling rather depressed about the human condition, because there is often little resembling Christian hope in such communities. Anyway, that is the reason for the high Neg. Themes score; it does not keep the series from being very profound and a good thing to watch.

Review Note about the theological themes: No religion in particular is emphasized, but some Christians may be bothered by the spiritual aspects. The explanation is a spoiler:

spoilerIt is suggested that there is a spiritual reason that Midori has become Seiji's hand, while her real body remains asleep. In one episode, the priests of many different religions (including Buddhist, Shinto, Christian) show up to Midori's house at the request of her family to try to wake her up. None of them are of any use. Finally, what appears to be a Native American shaman explains that her spirit is somewhere else and does not want to return to her body, and until she wants to return, her body will not wake up.

While this does not explicitly describe any religion, it could be seen as contrary to Christian truths. However, I do not think it is likely that any smart Christian viewer will interpret it as reality or be harmed by this show because of that aspect.

Also of note is that the nudity, while generally innocent in nature, is detailed and sometimes lengthy. Young or sensitive guys should stay away.

Review A nice serious show about economics and relationships, with a wolf goddess thrown into the mix.

Violence: There is occasional fighting, depicted realistically, with some blood. However, violence is never glorified or overstated.

Nudity: During the earlier episodes, there are plenty of scenes where Holo is wearing no clothes whatsoever--being non-human, clothes don't mean much to her. No details are shown, and it is not presented pervertedly.

Potential religious issues: This is the most likely place for a Christian to take issue. This show takes place in a world where Paganism and Christianity are clashing. Holo herself is a Pagan goddess. The church is corrupted and antagonistic to the Pagans, and while as far as I remember the church is never explicitly stated to be Christian, it is clearly modeled after the Christian Church.

Other potential problems: There is plenty of drinking of alcohol from time to time. Its effects are generally portrayed realistically.

Review This is one of my family's favorites. I'm not sure why others I've talked to aren't as happy about it. Perhaps I'm biased towards shows with interesting characters, weird metaphysics, and fantabulously awesome music by Yoko Kanno.

Notice about theological themes: A major part of the plot of this show revolves around predicting the future, with tarot cards, or psychic powers, or bizarre sciencey occulty things. However, how this works in the world of the show is highly unusual and, I think very interesting, though going into more detail would be spoilers. And of course, the rules of this fantasy world cannot be applied to our real world in any way, so don't do that.
